Michael
D. Watford
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
Michael D. Watford was appointed Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, of Ultra Petroleum Corp., an independent exploration and production company in January, 1999.
Thus far in his nine year tenure at Ultra Petroleum, Mr. Watford led a successful restructuring of the Company that has subsequently grown its proved reserve asset base from 50 Bcfe to 3,000 Bcfe while the market value of the enterprise has increased from $50 million to over $10 billion.
Mr. Watford has enjoyed a full range of industry experiences while working over his 34 year career for a number of energy companies including Shell Oil, Superior Oil, Meridian Oil (Burlington Resources), Torch Energy, and Nuevo Energy. Prior to joining Ultra Petroleum, Mr. Watford was Chief Executive Officer of Nuevo Energy Company for three and one-half years where he led the companyÕs growth in market value from $200 million to over $1 billion.
Mr. Watford attended the University of Florida where he earned his undergraduate degree in Finance in 1975. While working for Shell Oil, he attended night school at the University of New Orleans where he earned his MBA in 1978.
Previously, Mr. Watford served as a Director on the Boards of Southern Minerals, Nuevo Energy, and Belwether Exploration. He has exploration and production experience domestically and internationally and was briefly involved in coal-mining. He has worked in the downstream refinery and chemicals business and managed product marketing, processing, and pipeline businesses.
Currently he serves on the Board of the Independent Producer's Association of America and Treaty Oak Ironwood, Ltd.
Marshall D. (Mark) Smith
Chief Financial Officer
Mark Smith has over twenty years of progressive experience in all aspects of the energy industry, including operations, strategic planning, corporate finance, and business development. He most recently served as Vice President, Upstream Business Development for Constellation Energy, a Fortune 200 company. Previously, Mr. Smith served as Vice President, Business Development and as a member of the Management Committee for J.M. Huber Energy. He was retained by J.M. Huber, one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, to develop and lead a transactional merger and acquisition effort for their energy group.
Prior to joining J.M. Huber, Mr. Smith served as Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Management Committee for Gulf Liquids, a $200 million asset-based processor of natural gas liquids headquartered in Houston. At Gulf Liquids, he managed a major financial restructuring which maintained the financial integrity of the company in the face of deteriorating capital, commodity and insurance markets. Previously, Mr. Smith served as Managing Director, Investment Banking for Nesbitt Burns Securities. In this position, as at J.M. Huber, Mr. Smith focused on mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance advisory assignments for the energy industry.
Mr. Smith joined BMO Nesbitt Burns after spending nine years in Bank of Montreal's Energy Group, first in Chicago, subsequently in New York, and most recently in Houston. Prior to joining Bank of Montreal, Mr. Smith spent six years as a practicing Petroleum Engineer for both major and independent oil companies. His experience includes advisory roles to companies across the energy sector including Texaco, Union Pacific Resources, Edison Mission Energy, Oryx, Pennzoil, and Anadarko.
Mr. Smith holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma where he was a School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering Distinguished Scholar, and an MBA with highest honors from Oklahoma City University. Mr. Smith has also completed executive business development programs at Harvard University. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, served as past Chairman and is a current member of the Executive Committee of the Advisory Board of the University of Oklahoma Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering. Mr. Smith has also served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors for the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering.
Stuart E. Nance
VP Marketing
Joined Ultra Petroleum in 2002 as Director of Oil and Gas Marketing. Mr. Nance has over twenty-five years of experience in product marketing, and land management. He has demonstrated superior commercial skills and focused strategy development in directing Ultra Petroleum's rapidly expanding marketing efforts.
William R. (Bill) Picquet
VP Operations Rocky Mountains
Bill has 31 years of industry experience in all aspects of operations and
engineering with extensive experience in major North American producing basins
such as the Rocky Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Coast onshore, Offshore
California, and the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Mr. Picquet received his
B.S. in Natural Gas Engineering (Summa Cum Laude) at Texas A&I University in December
of 1973 and has since served in various engineering/management capacities with Conoco Inc.,
Transco Exploration, Torch Operating Company, Gulf Canada Resources, Advantage Energy
Services Ltd., and most recently as Senior VP Operations and Engineering Ð Mission Resources
Corporation. Bill is very familiar with deep, overpressured, tight gas reservoirs.
Roger A. Brown
Director
Joined the board of Ultra Petroleum in October 2007. Mr. Brown most recently was Vice President Strategic Initiatives for Smith International, Inc., and prior to that, President of Smith Technologies, a division of Smith International. He retired from Smith earlier this year. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Economics, History and Political Science and a Juris Doctorate all from the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Charles
Helton
Director
Is a cardiologist and an original investor in Ultra who has served on
the board since 1994. Dr. Helton has a lengthy history in the oil and
gas industry as a general and limited partner with several private, independent
companies.
Stephen J. McDaniel
Director
Joined the board of Ultra Petroleum in July 2006. Currently, Mr. McDaniel is with Midstates Petroleum, after spending seven years with Merrill Lynch in the oil and gas investment banking group in Houston, Texas. He began his investment banking career with Gordon Capital Corporation and Midland Walwyn Capital, Inc. both Canadian firms. Mr. McDaniel started his career with Conoco, Inc. in 1983 in various engineering, operations and business development positions in domestic and international operations..
Robert E.
Rigney
Director
Joined the board of Ultra Petroleum on June 12, 2001. Mr. Rigney served
as CEO and Director of Pendaries Petroleum Ltd. and Sino-American Energy
Corp. since their inception. Mr. Rigney has been a diplomat, oil company
executive and consultant in Asia for 20 years. Mr. Rigney has been responsible
for obtaining oil concessions in China, Indonesia and other Asian countries.
He has also assisted various Chinese oil and gas enterprises to train
their employees in the use of Western oil and gas technology and application.
